SIMULATOR SAFETY

These notes apply equally well to CTI's marine firefighting center and to an actual shipboard fire.

  1. ALWAYS STAY ON YOUR KNEES OR CROUCH! NEVER STAND-UP! NEVER RUSH INTO A SITUATION YOU HAVE NOT THOROUGHLY ASSESSED.
  2. Major dangers:
  3. -Stumbling and falling. Sprained ankles and broken noses.

-Inhaling toxic gases. Test your SCBA hoses before entry for proper connection! If you lose your mask and cannot find it crawl your belly for the exit.

  4. Other dangers:
  5. -Getting burnt by fire. Respect fire. Keep your distance.

  6. Air is toxic in the simulator. Do not breathe it. All normal SCBA rules apply. If one man’s SCBA alarm rings, everyone gets out. If one man switches over to bypass because of a regulator failure, everyone gets out. Don’t assume that your partner knows you are in trouble. Signal him.
  7. Panic is nature’s way of telling you to leave because you are not experienced enough to cope with the situation. Listen to that voice but don’t run. IF YOU NEED TO GET OUT OF THE SIMULATOR GRAB THE INSTRUCTOR’S ARM. THIS IS THE SIGNAL TO LEAVE IMMEDIATELY.
  8. Standby Hose Team: If someone gets hurt in the simulator YOU will get them out, no one else. Look alive. Pay attention. Stay keyed to what’s going on.
  9. The 10-minute rule is in effect. After 8 minutes in the simulator the Standby and Support teams will signal the Active Hose Team to come out. If they do not the Standby Team will enter at the 10-minute mark, with the sole objective of rescuing the missing team.
